My 2010 macbook died.

It has a 240GB SSD primary and a 250GB HDD secondary.

Bought a 2010 macbook pro which arrived today.

swapped the drives over and ram.
with my 8GB (2x4GB) got the no ram installed error. so put the 4GB 2x2GB back in it came with.

posts but apple logo and scroll bar, once bar gets halfway blank white screen.

done SMC and PRAM.
machine did boot on arrival to Yosemite and still have that HDD i took out.

I do have a time machine of my old machine but it a month behind whats on the drives, so rather get it working IF possible.

If hold ALT on boot the SSD is not seen.
Also sometime on boot get no ram installed error.

Also twice now have got quick flash of text on screen then black screen.

more worryingly the fan output gets hot fast.... within 20-30 seconds it is pumping hot air out!

Would you mind repeating all of that as a narrative in complete sentences? It's very hard to follow.

ok... bottom line

bought 2010 macbook pro and moved my dual disc setup from my 2010 macbook but mac does not see my moved SSD as bootable if holding alt.

but couple other issues have arose as above.
says no ram on boot sometimes and getting hot.

possibly duff logic board?

Need to ask the obvious question: did the machine boot before the disk swap?

The ribbon cable to the drive might be bad or was damaged when you did the swap. Not sure about the RAM errors.

At this point, might want to put the original HDD back into the new machine, to see if the system will boot.

Any spare enclosures or cables that can connect the original drive via USB, to see if that will boot?

it's 13" 2010 MacBook Pro 2.4GHz

yes booted with 250GB hdd and 4gb ram when arrived to Yosemite.

powered it off and swapped hdd, ram and optical.
on boot got no ram error.

put the original ram back in, same error.
reseated ram it booted and got loading bar under apple logo.
bar never completes goes to black screen once bar gets half way.

power off and hold alt on boot, got ram error again.
4 reboots later it boots with alt held down, the SSD or the HDD in optical bay not shown only recovery.

took it all out and put back as it came, get ram error on most boots and the loading bar never completes.
I am very careful when taking it apart but the cable could of got damaged, is the 2010 one of the models that are prone to hdd cable going?

will try usb caddy with drive tomorrow.

I have spoken to seller of item and they will send a prepaid label to send back.
Just thought if anyone had ideas I try before sending back.

So it worked when you received it, you took it apart and broke it and now you're sending it back to the seller for a refund? What a nice guy you are!

no, not true!

it did indeed stop working properly after swapping the HDD and I TOLD THE SELLER!

they said it would not explain the ram error or getting very hot quickly.
I did NOT hide from seller what I did.

EDIT:

I have NOT requested a refund from seller.
They are to look at the machine and repair (parts at MY cost).
seller is a refurb company.

yes booted with 250GB hdd and 4gb ram when arrived to Yosemite.

So it booted and worked fine. Then you too it apart and swapped out some parts and only then did it display the faults you described and because these faults remain when installing the original parts you claim that it must have been faulty from the offset?

So now the seller has to pay the return postage and spend time, effort and money rectifying an issue that you caused!

You shouldn't have tried to "swap everything at once".

I would have installed the SSD (only) first. Get that working.

Then... swap RAM (I seem to recall reading that the 2010 MBPro's can only use 16gb after a firmware update? Could be wrong about that).

Then, -maybe- do the DVD swap. This is something I would avoid.

Maybe it's time for you to consider something newer.

When I contacted the seller they said they had issue with the track pad but it seemed to be ok at time of sale.
they said it would randomly stop working.
This was NOT relayed when I bought it.

swapping drives should not make the machine hot, almost to point unable to touch heat exchanger after 2 mins on.

I have spoken with seller and I am paying for any parts required.
I am no amateur with laptops and have taken apart many including apple ones in past.

I am re-embursing return carriage to seller.
I know some pro models are prone to HDD cable failure and was extremely careful when inside.
Of course I cannot say 100% I did not break the cable.

The seller is a Mac/pc refurb company and they have spares which I will pay for of course!.

@Fishrrman I moved both drives as my ssd was configured so the home folder was on the other drive in optical bay.
Did not know if it would break the bond if not together.

update...

The refurbisher has tested the machine with new sata cable for HDD and it has been determined the logic board is faulty.

the heat exchanger gets very hot very quickly which is confirmed by the tester.

they tested the sata cable in another machine and is fine.
They can not find any parts damaged by me swapping parts.

I am awaiting new stock in new year and they will send me another unit.
