I installed Tahoe PB 3 on an external SSD from my M1 MBP 2021 and need my laptop for more critical things, so I'd like to pop this onto my M1 Mac Studio and boot from there, but it keeps giving me an error about a startup item, and not letting me boot from the SSD.

I am using the same Apple ID on both machines, but the user names are not the same. Could this be the reason why? One is a work machine and other is a personal one, hence different user names. If it's the incompatible user names/passwords, would changing them to be the same fix the issue, or is the external SSD locked to use with the MBP?

Did you boot Recovery and modify the security settings on the M1 Mac Studio to allow booting from an external device? Also, make sure you are not plugging the device into the DFU port.

Not using the DFU port, and I didn’t need to modify anything to boot from the external SSD. I wiped the SSD and installed Tahoe from the Mac Studio. It’s likely to stay connected to the Mac Studio, as this TB4 SSD (2 TB) seems to run the OS just as fast as the internal SSD (0.5 TB).

Get ANOTHER external drive (SSD).

Connect it to the Mac Studio.

Install an absolutely brand-new copy of Tahoe onto it.

During setup, connect your OTHER external drive (the "first one" with Tahoe), and use setup assistant to migrate your accounts/apps/data/settings from it to the new drive.

A roundabout way?
Perhaps.
But it will work (instead of flailing around with other attempts)...
