My new iPhone 4S arrived. In our house this means all the phones shift down. My wife will be getting my iPhone 4. I know I need to get a new SIM for that phone for her to use it since she has a 3GS. My question is, my daughter is moving from her 3G to my wife's 3GS. Can I simply switch out the SIM from my daughter's 3G and put it into my wife's 3GS, or do I need to go and have the carrier (AT&T) handle it?

Yes, your daughter's current Mini-SIM can be moved from her current iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS without issue or involving AT&T.

A simple backup on the iPhone 3G and restore on the iPhone 3GS will move all her apps and settings.
