Swipe between emails

Is there any way to change emails while you're reading one? Like a gesture which would enable me to keep scrolling through emails without going back to the email list, either on iPad or iPhone? I could have sworn there used to be a gesture so you didn't need to use the arrow keys or go back to the message list. Am I wrong?

the up/down arrows in the top right will do this, but I agree I wish there were a gesture.
