I don’t see the point in this change. Means you also need to swipe down from the left for notifications and right for control centre, on a taller device destroys one handed use.
Why not put a home area at bottom of the screen, like the note and s8 does, you simply press at the bottom to go home...no re-wiring of muscle memory required!!!
 
I feel like most people are using their phones with two hands anyways. I am currently using an SE, which is truly a one handed device, but even the 4.7" phone most people I see are using two hands.

People can't want a larger phone and then complain that they cannot use it one-handed.

One or the other. Large and two hands, or small enough to be used one-handed. Apple gives you a choice and so do a lot of other manufacturers.

Quite frankly, for the money asked for the phones I am handling mine with two hands whether it's a one handed device or not.
