Just yesterday I purchased additional iCloud storage and switched to backing up my iPhone 5 to iCloud. Can I now delete the backup in iTunes?

You can. Personally I keep an extra backup on iTunes which I do intermittently when I connect to the computer. Never can tell with the cloud, and backing up via iTunes is much faster. I believe in redundancy of systems.

Whole heartedly agree with this approach. It is your best solution for dealing with potential restoration problems going forward.

Yup. Everything backed up on iTunes is also backed up on iCloud. It is backed up every time you have your phone sleeping on a wifi network.
