Hey guys, I'm waiting for my new MacBook Pro 2020 1.4 GHz, 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD to arrive and would really appreciate your advice.

I'm currently using a 2018 MBP 2.4 GHz, 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD. I'm happy with the performance and I'm only upgrading because the keyboard is horrible, especially as a web developer I have to admit I underestimated how much of an issue it was going to be. I really look forward to having proper escape and arrow keys as well as a reliable keyboard.

However, do you think I'll notice much of a performance drop due to the lower comparative clock rate?

I'm still kind of torn whether this was the right decision. I don't think I need the power of the 10th gen, but I'm not really fond of the idea of sacrificing one fan and two ports just to get a better keyboard.

However, the 10th gen MBP would cost 500 EUR (around 540 USD) more here in Germany, which is just too much for me to justify. Then again, if I want to use this machine for a few years it might be better not to invest in “old” tech.

I mostly use the MacBook for web development. Therefore I usually have many tabs and multiple browsers open, a local server running, Affinity Photo etc. Nothing crazy, mostly heavy on RAM. Occasionally I do some video editing but for these kinds of projects I’ve found it faster and more intuitive to cut directly on the iPhone.

Do you think I made the right call?

My main concerns are: worse performance than my current model, worse value retention and a louder fan/worse thermal design...

Really appreciate any input! :)

You could go to GeekBench or other sites and see how the two systems perform on the various benchmarks. My guess is you will see little if any drop in performance. When a load is placed on these system they increase clock speed pretty quickly to meet the demand.
