I have a base rMBP right now and while it's awesome, I feel like I'm not using it "correctly". 95% of the time I plug it to an external 23" 1080p monitor in clamshell mode, as I get way more screen space and overall graphical smoothness over the built in screen. I don't bring it anywhere outside of my desk (I have phone, tablet and a Chromebook for on the go situations).
Since I'm basically using it like a desktop, I feel like I might as well sell it and get the new 27" iMac.

Some pros and cons if I made the switch:
Pros:
  • Thunderbolt display > 23" Acer monitor
  • A lot more storage with reasonable speed when choosing Fusion drive
  • Makes my workspace cleaner ;)
Cons:
  • I will be losing the awesome Retina display
  • Can't carry it around in case I really need a powerhouse on the go
  • Will probably take a loss with the rMBP's current resell price

Did anyone make the same switch? What's your experience?

My wife went from a laptop to a 21" iMac and an iPad. The pad meets all her portability needs. I use my MBP in clamshell mode with a 23" ACD when at home but couldn't live with just an iMac due to the way I travel.

Except for missing the retina display it sounds lime you would be happier with the iMac.
