has anyone switched to a 7200rpm drive and what are the improvements... and what type of drive have you used

Have you done a search? There are loads of previous threads about this.

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB is the current choice.

is that the absolute fastest drive? i want the fastest besides a ssd

That's the fastest one you can buy, period. No one else has a drive with that density, at 7200 rpm, on the market today.

I have the previous generation 7200.3 @ 320 GB and I'm quite pleased with the improvement over the original Apple hard drive.

Nope but its the fastest you can buy without having to pay almost what an SSD cost.

There are 10,000 and 15,000 server grade 2.5 drives that theoretically should fit your laptop (as well as converting it in a all-day shacking roller-couster. Also the new WD Raptor is a 2.5" into a aluminum adapter to make it 3.5" if you could tear it appart it should fit a laptop, though the aluminum is there for a reason, probably it will melt your laptop......
