I have the new 2011 imac and I'm trying to figure out how to switch between analog headphones and the built in internal speakers. When I plug in the headphones there is only Headphones in the sound preferences. I also tried googling the issue but all I could find is hardware solutions. There must be some solution because when I start up the imac with the headphones plugged in, the start up sound comes out of the internal speakers.

This subject has been discussed almost ad nauseam! :)

There is an internal switch incorporated in the input jack which switches the internal speakers off when listening via headphones or external speakers.

The only way to effect switching between internal/external speakers is via a USB connection.

The switch-on "Bong" is activated via a different circuit.
