I'm a total beginner to garageband and have a basic question. How do you change an existing loop from one instrument to another (eg. guitar to violin)? Can you do this only with software instruments, or also with real instruments you've recorded digitally? Thanks guys.

The software instruments are MIDI driven, so the information can be used to drive any software synth, the loops and/or recordings are digital audio, and cannot be substituted withou either re-recording a different sound, or choosing a different loop.

So, once you've recorded a part with a software instrument, you are free to change the sound to any other instrument, just as you are free to edit individual notes.
