I travel internationally frequently for work and try to buy local Prepaid SIM cards for the countries I work in. I'm considering buying an Officially Unlocked iPhone in Australia but I have some questions.

If I switch to a new carrier's SIM, does the iPhone know how to set up the data settings so that internet connection via 3G will work automatically? Are there a bunch of complicated settings I'll have to get from each carrier and manually change? Do most pre-paid SIM cards even offer data service? I haven't really looked into it, but I'm hoping that data use would somehow just charge against your credit on the card, but I know mobile phone companies seldom have such uncomplicated plans. Will I basically be stuck with an iPhone with just wifi access if I'm not using a subscription SIM card?

If that's the case, I'd probably be better off getting a SAMSUNG DUOS phone that takes 2 sim cards....one for my home US SIM and another for the local country I'm in. Then I could just use my iPod touch for wifi connectivity. I would love to have mobile internet connectivity, but if it's either complicated to set up on the iPhone or if it's generally not available on pre-paid SIM cards, then I guess it won't really work to shell out the $$$ on the unlocked iPhone.
