Good. I've heard too many horror stories about Norton screwing up Macs. Apparently it's quite good on Windows, but a nightmare on the Mac.

That's funny. I just UNinstalled Norton a few days ago because I thought it was the root some evil on my Mac. I won't bother to reinstall. When my virus supscription expires at work, I will mostly uninstall Nortan there also.

Norton used to be a decent piece of software. I think it has gone downhill since OS 8.

Oh well, no lost love on my part.

I posted a thread on this when the report first appeared on AppleInsider. It seems to have found its way to MacBytes. I think it's about time Norton Utilities went away. It's gained a reputation of causing more problems than it solves, at least on Mac OS X machines.

An application that will not be missed. Never used it on a mac, just on the PC. It was an excellent program when it was a DOS program, but when the windows version screwed my system over royally I've never looked back. R.I.P. Norton not a fond farewell.

In the Classic OS Norton Utilities was fine, but in OS X it caused nothing but troubles. The windows version of NU has fixed a couple of problems for me.

to give credit where I believe it's due: I thought the program rocked on os8 and earlier. Helped me recover my dads disk that I accidently deleted (when I was 12 or something. oops!).

But I put it on osx and.. well.. it changed something in the system (that's probably still lurking there), and didn't fix a single problem. It's no longer required by me. Sad to see mac support leaving tho, even if i don't use the program

It's good that they finally hit the can with that piece of rubbish. When they took over Central Point's great Mac Tools and PC Tools, we lost the better utilities.

It's just one more way Symantec is finding its way far away from Macintosh. First, they drove Think C and Pascal into the ground as Symantec C++, then, Norton Utilities. Unfortunately, they're keeping their anti-virus software alive, along with their firewall. We really need another firewall.

I think they should have said:

"We will no longer make Norton Utilities for Mac because it sucks hard and we don't want to keep selling crap"

I don't think I've ever heard of good results with this software on OSX.

NU on the pc also sucks so bad.....might have been good a long time ago but now its just bloted POS. Mac version was ok on OS8

Disk Doctor saved my current HD once when it corrupted and Disk Utility wouldn't fix it.

I was lucky.

I think that there is just not enough to fix on apple computers to make a decent profit. Especially considering the other tools around that have a much better reputation.

I used Norton Utilities (System Works) on Mac OS 9 and earlier, and thought it was a great product then.
Never really used it running Mac OS X, so no comment on the product now.
I believe any developer dropping support for Mac OS X is bad nieuws, except if the product really is bad. Problem is that Norton is a household name for "fixing stuff", and this news does not help "for Mac OS X available software products" lists, if you know what I mean...

I agree with you on Norton Utilities for Mac OS 9 and earlier - it saved my computer several times. The Mac OS X version, though, is a whole different story. I've heard reports of Norton Utilities for Mac OS X further corrupting disks it was supposed to be fixing, and one extreme case of Norton Utilities causing enough trouble to make the disk both unfixable and unformattable - VERY bad news to the disk's owner. That's why I'm glad to see it go; even though it means one less Mac OS X product, it also means one less bad Mac OS X product, too.

No, what they should have said was, "We Will no longer make Norton Utilities for Mac OS X, because OS X is a stable operating system that has few problems, and there is no longer a need for this type of software on the Mac platform. Windows on the other hand..."

I too have fond memory of Norton Utilities back in the day... Running disk doctor and Speed disk ust to be a monthly exercise. Having Norten was a necessity back in the OS 7/8/9 days...May Norton rest in peace....

I too used Norton under OS 8 with good success, but never bothered in OSX because of the horror stories I had heard.

I am currently using nothing for a utility. I am running Panther now, so what do all of you suggest as the preferred utility program for OSX, or is one really necessary?

The only thing I ever used NU for was occasional disk de-fragmentation, but now with the new file-system in Panther, I don't need that. I've not had a single problem with Mac OS X (since I transitioned with 10.2) that I could not immediately trace back to my own fiddlings with important system files. Oh, wait, no, I did get burned by the FileVault reclaim lost disk space problem. Still no utility would have fixed that one.

I have used their products since the days it was called Symantec. The Live Update is very easy to use. Maybe because I'm not a power user that it has saved me many times. If my programs are acting buggy, I first use NU. It finds many minor errors and an occasional major error. The last two times I ran the program 3 times. On the third run no error found. In my experience NU and Tech Tools Pro will find different problems to fix. Does anyone know when the support will end and it will no longer be safe to run NU in Mac OS X?

I used to use Internet Security which includes Firewall. I started using DSL wireless system which has a built in Firewall. Then it would alarm almost nonstop, which was very annoying. Earthlink said it was because that I didn't need the program, so it was uninstalled. That was over a year ago.
