"Symbol" problem in SMS for awhile..

I have an iPhone 6S and my friend has a Samsung and I've noticed this problem happening now for the longest time, since I had my 5S which was last year. We both contacted our carriers and they have done resets, but nothing has worked. She has T-Mobile and I have Verizon. Every once in awhile, I would send her a text and she would see those strange symbols. Any idea what could be causing it?

This appears to be a t-mobile issue. I'm not sure that there's much that can be done.
