Symbols in image file change

I've created a map image using ArcGIS on a windows computer with symbols but when I open the image on my Mac, the symbols change (e.g. what was a circle symbol is now '!' or what was a square symbol is now 'E'). I've tried different file formats like .emf, .jpg, .pdf and with all of them I can open the file in a windows computer and see the symbols as they were but they change when I open the same file on my Mac. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Edit: disregard. We found the problem and it was in the source computer.
