Background: iMac C2D running 10.5.4 and MobileME
Problem: Frequent spontaneous failure of file transfers from Mac to iDisk and other remote resources.
Troubleshooting: Speedtest showed upload speeds under 1% of download speeds. Activity Monitor showed persistent incoming traffic above 500 KB/sec. Experimentation showed me this went away if I killed Apple Mail. Problem also went away if I took my .Mac mail account offline, and brought it back online, but traffic eventually went back up, after an hour or so.
Solution: I emptied the Sent folders on the servers for each of my two accounts; I also moved 1000 to 1500 messages from two Inbox folders onto my Mac.
Result: Incoming traffic back down into the hundreds of bytes per second. Transfers to remote storage now works and is pleasingly fast.
