Just got my Mac back from the Geniuses but with a new hard drive. Can I just plug in my iPhone, hit sync, and it won't wipe all my apps, photos and settings?

Be careful because it is easy to accidentally erase everything. A good thing to do before hitting the sync button is to right click on the device and choose transfer purchases. This option will transfer any purchased apps or iTunes content to the computer.
