To say that I am a newb to the iphone would be applicable here. My nephew a short time ago purchased an iphone 4 so I took the chance to take his 3G off his hands for a small amount. Unfortunately he upgraded it to iOS4 before giving it to me before speed issues were revealed, but I haven't had much problem outside of slow-loading apps. But that isn't the issue at hand.

Since receiving the iphone I have installed itunes 9.2 on my Win 7 computer and downloaded several apps through it. I have since tried to install some free ringtones- yes, free- just SFX converted to the right format as I don't care for music ringtones. Anyway, itunes recognized them and inserted them into my ringtones library just fine. However, when I try to sync them I get the infamous "need to erase your iphone to sync with another library" error, even when trying to change to manually syncing music and videos, which hopefully means ringtones too. A little research has me thinking the iphone is still synced to my nephew's Mac, though why hasn't this been an issue with apps, which sync just fine whenever I connect my iphone? I have no music on the iphone, only a bunch of apps so I don't care if it "erases" the non-existent music, but what about my apps and my contacts? If I choose to erase my iphone to sync the ringtones do I lose these? Should I jailbreak the phone and install the ringtones that way (using iOS4.0.1 just in case I want to go this route)?

Thoughts anyone? Thanks.

specs: iphone 3G 8GB, iOS 4.0.1, Windows 7 64-bit, itunes 9.2.0.61
