Ok, I have an iPad with a full contact list. I recently got a Macbook Pro, but its never let me merge contacts from my iPad to populate my Mac address book...is there a way to do this?

Also, when I finally get an iPhone, will it ask to merge from my iPad contacts?

I use to struggle a lot with contacts and did not want to pay for MobileMe. You should set up a gmail account and sync your contacts to your gmail contacts from your iPad. Once you get your iPhone - your contacts will sync there. Now wherever you make any changes - it will be updated in all places you have your Gmail contacts list syncing.
My contacts sync across thunderbird, iPad, BlackBerry Storm 2, iPod Touch, iPad, and I will also enable my iPhone 4 once I trade my BBS2 for it in July.

Hi saberhaul
That's exactly what I am trying to do, but I have tried this over and over with many variations and haven't got it to work properly. I have created an exchange account on my iPad and enabled mail (following the instructions on Google), but it won't sync the contacts on my iPad to Google. If I create a contact on Google it WILL sync to my iPad (so I know something is working), but then if I edit the contact on the iPad it won't be changed in Google. I also want to sync contacts to my Mac and iPhone, but need to get past step one.
Any help on how you got it to work would be appreciated.

I'd wait and see how iCloud looks tomorrow before doing anything else.

This is because your contacts are local to the ipad and not on google.
you could do with make google your main store for contacts and calendar, then you can set up the devices as you need them.

So - to get your contact from iPad to google.
Sync (using itunes) the contacts to your address book on the mac.

Then in address book:
Prefs, Sync with Google.
This might take a few minutes. Check your contacts list on google via webpage

Then configure you ipad to sync contacts via exchange settings for google.

You might have some duplicates this way on your ipad.
In contacts, remove the contacts which are in the "All on My iPad" group.

iphone setup.
Remove any contacts in "all on my iphone" group.
Set up exchange the same way as you did on your ipad on your iphone and sync.
