Previously in order to setup sync for Google contacts or calendars with iOS it was required to setup CardDav or CalDav accordingly. Is this no longer a case? What is is the difference in setting up CardDav/CalDav nowadays vs simply checking Contacts / Calendars under your Google account in iOS?

Is it also possible to use both iCloud and Google accounts at the same time for syncing contacts/calendars or it is advisable to use only one?

Setting them up as "Google" accounts is essentially the same as CalDav and CardDav.

I've found that syncing contacts from two sources isn't really a problem but I prefer to keep it all clean with one source. ICloud provides more options than Google, I suppose.

Currently I have calendars from Exchange, Google and various read-only subscriptions.

In either case you have to pick a default account for new events or contacts, of course.
