Sync iOS4 and iOS5

We have an iPhone 3G running iOS4 and an iPad2 running iOS5.
Is there a way to keep these 2 devices in sync with iCloud not being an option on the iPhone?
 
A lot of reading in the Apple forums, and quite a bit of trial and error TBH - but I got it all to work.
If anyone cares for the solution, just let me know.
