Sync iPhone to iTunes without syncing songs played?

I don't want to sync the last played time / play count from my iPhone.

In the past, I can just make a copy of library file before syncing, then replace the library with the old version after syncing.

The problem is that the library files also contain info about iPhone apps. So if I replace the library files then I seem to lose the latest iPhone apps and data.

Got a better way?
