Sync Mail from Gmail without Lockdown in Sector 4

Hi,

Mail hangs on startup; I assume the preferences are corrupt. I'd like to reset my preferences and reimport my mail again but I'm afraid of the "Lockdown in Sector 4" error that haults all gmail traffic when an unusual amount of downloading occurs. It's happened to me once before and I'd like to avert it; how can I go about resetting my preferences and getting all my mail back without having this problem?
