Just to let anyone still with a sync problem know: resetting keychains resolved my there was a problem with the sync operation - .mac login failed issue. I had tried everything else including deleting dotmac plist files. Good help from mobileMe chat support. By the way he said there are no plans for a Tiger update to change .mac to mobileme in systems prefs.
