Nothing has changed on my computer (Macbook) or iphone (4S) but now it won't sync. I usually sync wirelessly but even tried plugging it in. It displays the message:

The iPhone “Chris' Iphone” cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the selected items (additional 8.16 GB required).

The capacity bar at the bottom shows that the phone is within capacity and I've got the "Sync only checked songs and videos" button clicked.

It's a 16 gig phone that shows a capacity of 13.60 and 1.57 free.

Any ideas?

Are you syncing music? Is all of it checked? You could try checking the "Manually Manage Music and Videos" and then removing any music you don't want on it.

How is your 13 GBs broken down across your device? How's your "Other" category look?

EDIT* While you may have 1+ GBs free, it's possible iTunes is trying to sync something that is larger than your available space.

The other category is 1.19. I haven't tried doing the manual sync but have only certain playlists checked to sync.

I even hit sync when the phone wasn't plugged in and received the same message.

Have you checked those playlists to see if they are small enough to fit on the device? You can still manually add your playlists without having iTunes syncing everything.

Everything should fit. I haven't changed the amount of items checked. It's all of the sudden. One day, everything is fine and the next... poof.

Something has changed or shouldn't be getting an error. Clearly iTunes is trying to add something when you don't have enough room.

If I were you, I'd "manually manage music and video" to start. This will give you the option to manually add and remove media from your device. Then I'd check to make sure iTunes isn't trying to sync and app or two that might be too large. Lastly, I'd go through all of iTunes' tabs to see what exactly you're syncing.

Have you downloaded any new apps on your computer? If so, iTunes will try to sync those on the next sync which could be causing an issue.

If you still can't find what is taking up the space, you may just want to restore and start over.
