Sync/spinning wheel

I've never noticed the spinning wheel besides the Bluetooth icon spinning for extended periods of time. Can anyone tell me what it's for because it can spin for 2-3 minutes at a time, numerous times during the day. It usually starts spinning when I'm on the recent/missed calls screen.
