Sync to gmail

Ok probably a dumb question but I've searched and can't find an answer. How do I sync all of the content from my phone, cal and contact, to gmail? I have it set up as an exchange account but it never seems to sync unless I add new content. It never syncs my old stuff. Maybe I set up the account wrong or need different instructions?

it you've set it up as exchange account, every time you go to contacts or calender it syncs automatically - you should see the rotating circle every time you open contacts as example.

If you want to check this, change the phone number or some contact details for an existing contact and save it. You should see the change in gmail, instantly

I've been using this for more than a year now without any issues

Exchange does this automatically. Go to http://m.google.com/sync on mobile Safari and make sure you have it set up correctly.
