syncing gmail with mail app, and iphone

I am wondering what i could do to make this work. Ideally i would like both my iPhone mail, and mac mail to both get the same messages. However, lets say i get 2 emails while out, lets say i read one, i would like my mac mail to say unread one when i come home. Then when i read it on my mac, i go back to the iphone and there is no new mails.

I have tried to do the imap thing, and it seems it never updates the unread count. It appears to do it on the phone, when i read one on mac mail, but when i read an email on the iphone it remains unread on the mac.

sorry for ranting!

please help!
