Syncing iMessage

I'm having difficulty getting my iMessage to sync (and notify) correctly across all of my devices. iMac, MacBook Pro (Touch Bar), iPad Air (wifi only), and iPhone 7.

Should my conversations be originating from my phone # or Apple ID (email)?

Any suggestions?
