For YEARS, through multiple iPhones and iPads, multiple Macs, and multiple versions of iOS and MacOS, I've never been able to reliably sync my devices through WiFi. Occasionally it works successfully, but more often than not I encounter what happened to me just now when I tried... the iPhone shows up in the sidebar in the Finder, I click on it, and I click Sync. It thinks about it for a few minutes, and then it simply disappears from the sidebar. Sometimes it starts the sync, and fails part of the way through (again, with the device then disappearing from the sidebar).

Thinking that maybe the sleeping iPhone's WiFi maybe has shut off, I've also tried waking the phone up and leaving it on while I initiate the sync, but more often than not, it fails.

Am I doing something wrong here, or syncing over USB the only reliable way?

For me via USB is the only reliable way. Like you said sometimes WiFi sync works but many other times it doesn't for me.
