syncing selected songs

i have too much content so when i try to sync it says i can't. in past it has given me an option to automatically sync a selection of songs but it doesn't give me this option now. Also when my photos sync with iphoto it gives me an option to delete the ones on my phone and i say yes but after i sync the phone the photos are still there. can anyone help? tx
