Syncing shared libraries (iTunes & iPhoto) to iDevices?

I have shared iTunes and iPhoto libraries at my home. They show up in each other's shared section in the apps, but it seems I cannot select any shared items for syncing with iPod/iPhone devices (in the device settings in iTunes). I first have to copy the items into the local library. Is there a way to sync shared libraries to iPod/iPhones as well?
