So this might be niche in this day and age.

I don't think music streaming is worth it and still have a local music library consisting both of old music I've ripped myself and music I've bought from iTunes. If there is anything new I still buy it (if available) from iTunes (and still spend less on music compared to paying for streaming).

In general I've no big problems syncing some of the songs on my phone to my AW. But I've noticed that for some reason the music that does give me grief and refuses to sync to my AW are newer purchases from iTunes?

The tracks/albums are downloaded both to my computer and phone but still does not show up when looking at locally stored music on the watch.

Are there still other people like me that run a local library and has anyone else run in to this problem and did you find a fix?

I recently got a new AW, after sending in my old for battery exchange. So this watch is basically set up as new but recovered from the back up from my old watch but the issue persist.

This is not a huge deal for me, but a bit annoying not being able to listen locally to new albums when I go for a run.

It sucks really I’ve tried this on my series 5 and ultra and it’s very inconsistent. It’s nearly impossible for my songs to completely sync there’s usually an issue. I gave up on watch local storage it never fills up watch. The most success I’ve had is syncing specific playlist but sometimes it works and again not 100% perfect or works. I don’t think Apple want u to listen to your music. They ignore local storage experience. Buy an iPod it’s a way better experience. Genius music playlist is awesome on my 7th gen classic.

There has been a limit on how much storage you can use on the watch. Last I heard it was 8 GB.

The playlist I try to sync is well within the limits I find listed.
Same here, I limit the number of playlist but I find AW always has an issue. They can't play this song or that song. Or some play list will sync. Some won't. It's really frustrating. The podcast streaming does work though. Never tried Apple Music and that works from what I hear. Same with Spotify when I used to pay it, that works on AW. But I whole heartedly think apple does not want to get that to work well to drive their services subscription department. They never advertisement local music storage. I'm coming from 5 years of Apple Watch use, local music updates and apple ongoing development is nonexistent.

This prompted me to try and download a bunch of music to my watch. I got to Johnny Cash and got bored of clicking. We’ll see how it goes.

I too have music randomly sync (and then unsync!) from the AW... A Pain when I get to the gym (iPhone left at home) and there's 2 songs on the watch, rather than the 800 from yesterday

Bonus issue with WatchOS10: This “Playing this item requires an Apple Music membership…” warning forever re-appears as soon as I click OK... Is it because the iPhone has been left at home and it's confused? FYI my music is a mix of bought from iTunes and ripped myself.

Did you have some music before?

I had the same issue, and finally got it working because of one of the following steps:

  • Restarted apple watch (still didnt work)
  • Unpaired apple watch from iphone (still didnt work)
  • Signed out of icloud on iphone (still didnt work)
  • Restarted apple watch again, finally worked
So idk if one of those steps fixed it, or if all of them together did lol, but i'm not longer getting your error
