The DS411 I bought turned out to be defective. I need to buy a replacement enclosure or other option. Basically I have 4 bare drives I want to use as network drives. Ideally I want to have each drive mounted individually (show up as separate drives when I access them via iMac). I also want to share those drives on my network (I have a Netgear router with usb ready share) so not sure if going the usb route is better or getting enclosure with ethernet...any recommendations? I don't need to have access to files on these drives while away from home, basically I just stream photos, music and movies wireless to my Air and iPad. I thought about getting usb enclosures and a airport extreme, would that be a good solution? Is APE better than the netgear N600 I have? Any help would be great, thanks!

Before getting my Synology, I have been using this

Gigabit ethernet is noticeably faster than USB 2.0 (1000 Mbps vs 480 Mbps). You,ll need to have a gigabit router and Cat 5e or Cat 6 cables though.
