DSM 4.3 added a feature to stream compatible content directly from the NAS to an AppleTV. It worked for about a day before the icon disappeared. Now, it appears sporadically, but everything else works just fine.

I'm wondering if this is a Bonjour issue. My iOS devices seldom sync over wi-fi. I tried using NFS manager recently and it complained about the lack of a DNS server on the network. So I wonder if this is all caused by discovery issues.

Synology is no help. They claim the feature does not exist, even though they marketed the hell out of it and I have used it successfully before.

Should I set up a DNS server or is that irrelevant?

What you're trying to do is not officially supported by Apple and has always had sketchy reliability.

Mine works perfectly fine and I use it on a daily basis.

Are you using video station on the iOS device? Or are you using video station from a browser?

Synology NAS will not airplay

Both. While iOS can AirPlay through itself, the stream function goes directly from the NAS to the ATV, keeping discreet audio channels intact.
