I have been having some issues of system crash and slowdown on my MacBook Air 2017 (1.5 GHz, 8 GB, Mojave 10.14.6). While it's not serious, this is not something that I've ever experienced on my previous Macs.

Below I am reproducing some readings I see -

A) From the Mac OS system check (when I hold down the D key at startup) -

1) Mac OS base system 2 GB

Used 1.28 GB
Free 721.9 MB (0 KB purgeable)

2) Macintosh HD

Used 86.11 GB
Free 33.26 GB

B) From the Activity Monitor right after boot up -

1) Physical memory 8.00 GB

Mem used 2.11 GB (App mem 1.08 GB, Wired 1.01 GB, Compressed 0 Bytes)
Cached files 1.18 GB
Swap used 0 Bytes

2) CPU usage

System 0.45%
User 0.54%
Idle 99.49%

Threads 760
Processes 232

Do these values look okay to you?

Thanks!

I forgot to ask - does it make a difference if I have several (six) desktops open? Does that load up the RAM in some way?
No. In my experience using at least that many desktops for many years, it has little or no effect on system performance.
