Hang occurs occasionally whilst building Apache Atlas - which is Java based open source project. A build without tests may only take 3-4 minutes, but with unit tests it may run for 30 mins+ so represents a fair workload on the system - ie High CPU/IO

I did use CMD-CTR-SHIF-4 to take a screenshot at about this time - co-incidentally, unsure if it's related.

I've seen this on 10.13 as well as the current 10.13.1 beta

When freeze occurs

  • Internal screen, and external screen are still showing the frozen video output
  • The cursor does not move
  • The clock is frozen at the freeze time
  • A text cursor is not flashing
  • The touchbar does respond (though not useful)
  • IP is not pingable/cannot connect via SSH
  • Fans initially running fast / system hot, but if left they slow down a little but area below screen is VERY hot to the touch - gradually cools
  • No response from cmd-opt-esc (force quit)
  • After 6 minutes no change
  • Screen did blank after around 20 minutes
  • After touching keyboard, internal display comes back on. External (USB-C) does not.
  • Press power button -- external screen coimes back on - all still frozen
  • Still frozen with no put possible
  • After 24 mins hard reboot with power button
  • System cold boots as normal
