It's got to be something that carried over from Leopard as it's now happening in Snow Leopard.

I figured I'd put it out there to see if anyone else has had this issue and knows what it might be.

I've noticed this same problem for a few months lately; in my experience though, it seems to be linked to instances where you have so many extra preference panes that the System Preferences window goes off the screen. When the window shrinks to match the size of the given preference pane you select, the UI widgets in the title bar vanish, like in your screenshot.

Have you tried trashing the System Preferences cache file? That might help...

That popped into my head (the having so many extras). I hadn't considered trashing the cache file, though. I'll try it.

Edit: Trashing the cache file didn't help. I'm checking how it reacts without all the extras I did have installed and...there we go. Works fine now.
