System sounds not playing

Hey guys, I have a late 2013 13" rMBP, and I have it hooked up to a monitor over HDMI, and I use an external bluetooth speaker for sounds.

This setup works great, but the issue I'm having is that the system sounds seem like they're trying to play over HDMI, which has no speaker output, and I'd like them to play over the internal speakers whether the bluetooth speaker is connected or not.

Regular sound output works fine over the bluetooth speakers, but the system sounds (such as receiving an email or imessage) do not work. Any ideas?

Press, alt, click the volume icon, and make sure you bluetooth speakers are selected as the sound output.

To add one more check to snaky69's reply, open System Preferences>Sound preference (you can not do this from the Sound icon in the Menu), select Sound Effects and make sure "Play sound effects through" = Internal Speakers.
