I'm moving to Oakland later this month for school, but I'll be flying into Los Angeles for a couple weeks first so my family can get me settled before I leave. With that being said I want to get my phone service arranged and out of the way as soon as possible. As the title says, I walk into a T-Mobile store in LA, will I be able to activate a line with an Oakland area code?

Have you thought about getting your phone with your "home" area code and just taking it with you?

OOPS - just noticed you are from Canada. Different issue all together.

I will share that having a "local" area code is becoming less and less the norm, so having one from LA would not be bad. I would think they would give you one for anywhere in the country you want. They just pull the number out of their database.

Yes the T-Mobile stores have the ability to give you a phone number from any area code in the same state.
