T-mobile and 2gs

I inherited a 2GS iPhone. I was able to jailbreak it and unlock it to use my T-mobile card which has a data plan. Unfortunately, I can only make and receive calls on it and send text messages. The other functions and apps do not work unless I am connected to a wireless network.
Did I miss something in the settings that enable you to use an alternate data plan?

What doesn't work unless on wifi?
If u have carrier data I don't see the prob.
