I don't even try to use LTE from AT&T in midtown. Everything loads faster on 4G.
I'm usually near Rockefeller center though and even the 4G can just spin for minutes upon end. There are just too many damn people crammed in these blocks to really use data in a fast/enjoyable/tolerable way.
I'm only on 4G so I've only heard second hand but someone who is on LTE told me that the frequency band T-Mobile uses on LTE is a pretty high frequency so it doesn't penetrate buildings well.
