I've been reading rumors that the iPhone 5S purchased from T-Mobile for full retail is actually *locked* and can only be unlocked after 40 days of using T-Mobile service. Can I get some confirmation on this? I'm sure tons of people preordered the 5S directly from T-Mobile last year, was it really locked?

Is the consensus that purchasing the T-Mobile version from Apple gets you a truly UNLOCKED phone on day one? Thanks!

I can't confirm, but I thought that it was only locked if you were on a plan where you paid zero up front and paid for the phone over time with an extra charge on your monthly bill. I think if you pay in full up front, it is unlocked.

Hmm. I hope that's the case, but I haven't heard that before.

Purchasing the iPhone from a T-Mobile store results in you receiving a locked phone even if you purchase it in full. It would only be unlocked after 40 days of using T-Mobile service.

Purchasing it from Apple results in an unlocked phone at the time of purchase on day one.

This is true.
