Obviously you're not a golfer.
according to this, apparently T-mobile is going to/has started to decrease the termination fee depending on how far into your contract you are.

anyone tried this yet with T-mo or other carriers that prorate? i am curious about the dollar amount as in anticipation of iPhone 2 i just found out that my t-mo contract is not up until feb of '09. :)

I can't say that I've tried that, but I have heard many stories about people calling AT&T and having AT&T give them a service credit for the amount of the early termination fee. This may be an option for you to explore.

Luckily for me, my T-Mobile contract expires this Tuesday :D
