The last time I checked on this service, it required the user to give up iMessage.

If this is true, there is no way I'll connect the watch to Tmobile.

I think the iMessage issue is only if you use Digits to setup multiple phone numbers on the same device. Using the same phone number on multiple devices should not require iMessage to be disabled.

I can confirm iMessage does not need to be disabled when setting up a Series 3 LTE Apple Watch on T-Mobile.

If multiple numbers are used on the same iPhone, iMessage will get confused at to what is the phone's "real" number and be constantly activating and deactivating the phone number integration on iMessage. This isn't how DIGITS works with the Apple Watch, however, so no need to worry.
