I love that new T2 Macs are save in the way that if someone steals my Mac, they can't just open up the computer, put the drive in a external case, and then get access to all my files.

Btw, due to this, is FileVault not needed anymore? I thought that was the entire idea of FileVault.

Anyway, my external backup is still a worry of mine. I'm about to replace my ****** 5400rpm external drive with a Samsung T5 500GB SSD. My question is, will it be slower if I decide to encrypt the drive via Disk Utility.app? I'd love the advertised 500MB/s in both directions.

(and no, I definitely don't want to use Samsung's software to encrypt the drive)
