I play table tennis in a few leagues and have been reviewing a few apps that are somewhat related to table tennis but more often than not, end up being 'ping pong' games.
one thing i have noticed is that they end up with poor bat movement and no touch screen interaction other than the menu.
If any sporting developers are out there, it would be nice to have an app that would allow for the complex movements inherent in table tennis to come to the table on the iPhone.
After much thought, I think that without a turn by turn system, table tennis is not possible in other than silly beer pong style of games.
Turn by turn would allow a serve to be set up and 'executed' via actual serve motions that utilise the accelerometer. after a ball is hit, physics could decide where the player can stand depend on her own stamina, training and experience.
All hits could be executed from the standing point of the player and with motion-based accelerometer plays. I long for this and with the world popularity of table tennis, I can be sure that a well-executed app made by actual players and coaches would generate loads of income.
Our look at a few table tennis apps from the app store will be finished tuesday or wednesday but we really hope for something faithful to actual table tennis and not ping pong.
