Is there somewhere setting to limit max amount of cards (=tabs) one can have open in Safari at the same time? And what's the default limit set to? How many tabs do I have to open to significantly slow MacBook down?

How long is a piece of string?

Depending on the content of the tabs and the specs of your computer you might be stuck with 5 tabs or good with 500. I typically have 30 or 40 open at a time on my 2015 MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM. I rarely notice issues but sometimes a runaway process on a webpage will require me to close that particular tab.

Best bet is to familiarize yourself with Activity Monitor and watch your processes and memory pressure in there.

No strict limit as fas as I know.
