Tag Unopened Files in Finder

I would like to tag unopened files in finder. Much like how Mail or Messages signifies a blue dot as an unread email. I'd like the same functionality in finder for unopened files in particular ones that have been downloaded. I was hoping to use Finder's built-in coloured tagging system to do such a thing. Is this even possible? I'm happy to use a third party tool because its getting increasingly difficult to find unopened files.
