Tags and files on Time Machine? (but not part of any backup)

Hey all,

I tried tagging some files on my Time Machine, files that were outside of the Time Machine that I didn't want to have on my actual machine, and I couldn't get them to show up when I clicked on that particular tag in the sidebar. The tag works for files on my machine, but not on the files on the Time Machine.

Anyone know why this might be?

I don't know how to do this in System Preferences, but was able to do it via Cocktail.
